Beachbody Apps

Designed this 9-platform app experience used by over 3 million paid subscribers

2018-2024

My role: UI Design, UX Strategy, Design Lead

The app experience at BODi (previously Beachbody) spanned web, iOS and Android mobile, TV (Roku, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV), a stationary bike tablet, Apple Watch and more. It was available in 5 languages.

In my role as a hands-on player/coach for a team of 3 designers, I operated on a fast-moving product roadmap using a test-and-learn approach, balancing innovation with complex legal and regulatory requirements, including FDA and FTC compliance, as well as GDPR for our international audience.

The mobile app was the focus of the experience

The platform offered thousands of workout videos, fitness programs, recipes, meditations, and more, with more than 50% of usage on the mobile app.

We followed an Agile process, using 2-week sprints, and worked with counterparts in Product, Engineering and Data to continually measure and iterate on the experience.

Our focus was on increasing engagement, knowing that the more users interacted with content, the longer they stayed. Our strategy centered on improving content discovery to make exploration easier and more rewarding.

Launched new features like heart rate tracking

As wearables gained traction in the fitness space, it became more important to integrate them further into our experience. So we launched a feature where users could connect with Apple Health and track their heart rate alongside their workouts. Trainers also encouraged users to track their heart rates, which encouraged users to adopt this new feature.

We saw Apple Watch app usage climb 50% after this feature launched.

Led full platform redesigns, such as a unified redesign of our TV apps

I also led various full platform redesigns. We created a new unified design for Beachbody’s 4 TV apps, adding a number of new features such as search, favorites, and gamification, and creating a TV-specific Design System.

Helped improve overall health with new behavior and wellness tracking features

We designed features to help users understand the connection between their behaviors and well-being. By tracking workouts, nutrition, and mood together, users could see how their daily choices impacted their physical and mental health - driving a more holistic approach to wellness.

Created community to support health journeys

This platform enabled users to track activity, share progress, and support one another. We designed both the participant and community manager interfaces.

After the launch, our NPS score for the product rose from -20 to 50. Active communities grew 4x to around 45,000 and total active users grew from around 100k to 400k.

Overall, 6 million participants have used the platform.

Motivated usage through incentives

I led the design of a gamified experience to incentivize usage and drive retention on the Beachbody / BODi platform. This featured required the design and creation of 500+ unique badges and the design of a myriad of user flows across all platforms.

10 million badges have been earned to date, and the launch led to a 18% engagement lift.

Envisioned an AI chatbot to discover new content

Finding the right fitness program was a important driver of retention. So the goal of this chatbot was to help users find a program based on their unique needs. It asked multiple choice and free-form questions about users’ fitness preferences then would recommend a fitness program.

RESULTS

I grew paid subscribers 200%, from 1M to 3M.

The app has been awarded with honors such as Best Workout App by CNN, and users have streamed over 20 million minutes of video.
