BODi Bike launch

Led the launch of a stationary bike tablet app

Beachbody wanted to capitalize on the in-home cycling trend

In-home cycling and connected fitness was a huge trend during the pandemic, led by Peloton. Beachbody wanted to capitalize on this trend, so they purchased a stationary bike company, called MYX Fitness, that already had a bike in market. The goal was to use their bike hardware and add our software and content, in order to expand our offering and have a new revenue stream.

The project scope

The bike had a 21.5” swiveling tablet screen and the app connected with the bike hardware to show stats like cadence, speed and calories burned. The bike also shipped with a Polar heart rate monitor, and heart rate monitoring that needed to be integrated into the UI.

This was a brand new platform for Beachbody, so I collaborated with various stakeholders and did rounds of user testing during the design process to ensure we were going down the right path.

Once the design process got going, I led a small team of 3 designers.

A diverse content library and engagement metrics

The bike included Beachbody’s vast library of on-demand workouts and fitness programs. It also recorded users’s stats, and showed users their behaviors and trends, to motivate usage.

Live classes

Live cycling classes were popular on competitor platforms, so that was a key feature in the initial launch. We designed the before, during, and after states of a live class, and let users save upcoming classes. Above is a view of the class schedule.

Heart Rate tracking

The bike shipped with a heart rate monitor and heart rate zone training was a key part of the cycling workouts. So heart rate tracking, and showing your heart rate on-screen was a requirement.

We integrated our Apple Watch app, and designed an innovative line chart that showed your heart rate progress over the course of the ride, with the color of the line corresponding with the zone you’re in.

The launch was a success and drove $4.8 million in sales in its first year.
